Stop overthinking: A path to start with Motion Design

Or better said... Let's focus :)

Hey everyone! 👋

This week’s podcast dives into a question I get often: How should I approach learning motion design? Specifically, should you focus on one skill or technique, or take a broader approach to learn as much as possible?

I share my thoughts, based on the messages I’ve received, and break it down into five key points that might help you get started.

Dive right in (to the listen :) )

Main takeaways from the podcast

🎨 Motion design is broader than ever
The industry today is highly diverse, blending different skills to solve unique problems. This means you don’t necessarily have to niche down immediately—motion design now includes everything from 2D and 3D animation to scripting and branding.

💡 Start with what excites you
Forget “following your passion”, but focus on what genuinely interests you. When you’re excited about something, you’ll push through the ups and downs of learning and keep going when it gets tough.

⏳ Give your focus some time
It’s tempting to jump between tools and techniques, but the real progress comes when you commit time to mastering one thing. Whether it’s weeks or months, dedicate yourself to deep practice before moving on.

🌟 Get known for your skill
As you improve, your work will naturally get noticed. Focusing on a specific skill not only helps you get better but also builds your reputation in that area. Quality always stands out.

📐 Build on strong foundations
Great work comes from understanding the basics; Graphic design principles and the fundamentals of animation. These will elevate your work, no matter what style or tool you’re using.
